Some of you have been axin’ for it, and due to massive calendar mismanagement, I’m a givin’ it to you: the entire ten songs that comprise the RadiOblivion intro!
Added attractions include The Seeds x3, the Payments, Michael Jackson, The Hydes, Billy Mays, The Hall Monitors, Farah Fawcett, The Rhythm Addicts, Thee Milkshakes, and maybe even some more… “Tune in” and find out!
My pal Jimmy Hook is a self-professed “Lawyer for the Chicago Mob” documenting and participating in the seedy underbelly of Mafia malfeasance by way of the Jimmy Hook channel on YouTube. And the man has talent with the camera; which is totally out of character for a crooked lawyer! But, you don’t ever say a cross word about a man that can arrange to have you fitted with Concrete Boots.
Besides being a great video I bring this to your attention for two other reasons:
Watch the new episode Monsters & Mexicans below and pay attention to the opening lines by that cat “Big Country” as juxtaposed to the final scene with Tommy Terranova. I wanna shout at the screen “You’re right, Jimmy; Big Country was up to no good!” Phew… this could have been the last of Jimmy Hook and Tommy Terranova were it not for Tommy’s quest to be Caesar.
“This is the real thing. This is not The Sopranos”
*Note: being a bunch of Mafia bad-dudes they speak in the manner you’d expect Mafia bad-dudes to speak.
Sky is in ICU and is still considered in critical condition.
Needless to say Sky seemed to be getting a wee bit better but took a turn for the worse …. I won”t go into details here but suffice it to say when we got him here in the ambulance, the doctors were telling me they just couldn”t tell me he would be okay. I was devastated.
It has been touch and go all day …. and probably about 3 hours ago the nurse told me he was going down … blood pressure was dropping like crazy and they were trying one last medicine. she asked me to go over and start talking to him … as his sedation was low enough that he would understand me ….
so i did … and it slowly got better and better and better ….. and it was going steadily up …. and he was feeling better ….
he has a tube down his throat so he could not talk and that was very frustrating for him …. so i told him i would ask him yes and no questions … and he was good with that …. slowly i figured out all the questions he had and answered them …..
now his color is back … and the purple is receding a lot ….. his blood pressure is normal … the heart rate is still a little erratic but they are more confident now that that will get better … once all of his vitals are steady and normal they will take that darn breathing thing out of his throat …. this was only a precautionary tubing so they could get him breathing well while they worked on all of his other vitals ….
once he gets stable they will start trying to figure out what is the root cause of the problems is … there seems to be an infection somewhere and since he has suffered from stomach pain for basically all his life … we are certain it is somewhere in there … but the gastro guy can”t do anything to check it out until he is stable ….
I feel much better about it now … he seems more able to fight to stay alive …. and is gaining his strength little by little …
he is asleep right now and seems to be resting well … i”m here in the room with him in ICU …. they have wireless here and i had thought to bring my computer just in case they did … just felt confident enough he is okay to pull it out …. he is sleeping really well right now …
so please keep him in your prayers that he will beat this …. and be able to get out of this place!
will keep in touch and let you know what is happening … now that i”m hooked up here in his room that will be easier to do ….
Sabrina
No sooner had I finished reading that – and feeling the same spark of hope – that I saw a link to this article on Austin360.com stating Sky Saxon, founder of the brilliant ’60s garage band the Seeds, died Thursday morning at St. David’s Hospital…
Little known fact: The Seeds, along with Arthur Lee & Love were enormous influences on Jim Morrison and The Doors!
Keep tuned to the GaragePunk Podcast Network; there will surely be some great tributes in the days to come.
Our hearts go out to Sabrina and the entire Saxon family. They will truly need some Sunlight in their lives…
Rest in peace.
Here is a great video of The Seeds performing their anthem Pushing Too Hard. Enjoy it and send it to everyone you know!
After an unplanned, but welcome six week haitus, it’s time for RadiOblivion No.38…
Presenting a feat of daring never before attempted in podcasting—well, not on purpose anyway: Over an hour’s worth of specially handcrafted silence.
That is right! Pure, unadulterated silence.
However, due to a mix-up at the studio, listeners may experience a spot here or there where the vacuum of sound is partially broken up by some detectable levels of auditory stimuli by such POUNDERS as the Lone Twister, Left Arm, The Jinxes, Dean Morgan, Satan’s Pilgrims, The Inner Thoughts, Dynamites, Ray Daytona and the Googoobombos, Jumpin’ Beans and Willie, the Jungle Rockers, and maybe 11 or 12 other acts.
An experiment in sound brought to you by Michael Kaiser in association with the GaragePunk Podcast Network.
*As a special treat I’m posting the video of The Renegades doin’ 13 Women. Here at RadiOblivion not only do we provide Better Living Through Discarded Music, but we bring it to you – the discerning individual.
A milestone at Michael Kaiser’s Haus: the second blog in a row that starts with a “remember when”! So… remember when I professed my love for Kicks magazine? Kicks was the de facto Bible for Rock ‘N’ Roll aficionados the world over, friends. Hatched from the fertile (not fertilizer!) minds of the dynamic duo of Miriam Linna and Billy Miller – purveyors of the Big Beat – it contained the stories and anecdotes that you would never have the chance to lay yer peepers on otherwise. Of course there were loads of other contributing writers, but the articles penned by these two folks always took the cake for creativity, originality, depth, and down right comedy! But, I’ve previously gushed all this stuff in the already-linked-to article.
Kicks, of course, is no more. I sent an email to Norton Records H.Q. years ago to petition a single volume tome collecting all the issues of the magazine. Billy was kind enough to reply with “Sounds great! Find a publisher.” I had no response to that, so I let the sleeping dog lie. Of course Kicks really didn’t “go away”. We can continue reading the articles that would be included in subsequent issues in the form of liner notes on the essential Norton Records releases; but I still wanted more!
A couple months ago rumor spread through the internet like suntan lotion at a nudist beach day event (actually, I read it in a Norton Records email update) – Miriam Linna was launching into the Blogosphere! My anticipation immediately foamed up into a powerful lather and I had to push the thought to the back of my mind; there was no telling when this would come to fruition. Well friends, I’m pleased all over to direct your little clicky-mouse device to Kicksville 66: Miriam Linna’s blog. Did you see that?! “Miriam Linna” (in the possesive form) and “blog” in the same sentence… together. Mind-bogglin’! Do yourselves a favor and start with the very 1st article The Cramps: 1976 and read Miriam’s recollections of being The Cramps’ original drummer.
The beauty about Kickville 66 is that it will become so popular that the lovely Miriam will be compelled to continue blogging, Billy will surely be coerced into starting a “Billy Blog” (no relation to “Billy Beer”), and perhaps a 3rd blog will be established for the purpose of publishing back issues of Kicks online!
Remember when I confessed my love for old commercials? Well, to build upon that is my affinity for all media concerning the Atomic Age of the 1950’s and 1960’s: Public Service Announcements (PSA’s), the aforementioned commercials, TV, educational films (more on that in a later post), music, and movies like this Motorola sponsored film Atomic Attack!
*This film is about 50 minutes long. If your boss frowns on soaking up that amount of time whilst on the clock, download a version from Archive.org. That’s what I did! It now resides on my iPod for late-night enjoyment in the comfort of my own bed – much to the dismay of Mrs. Kaiser. The film is in the Public Archive, so do with it as you please.
Added bonus: Includes a performance by a young Walter Matthau. That cat was cool, baby!
In this sobering film, a family living 50 miles outside of New York must escape the fallout from a nuclear bomb dropped upon the Big Apple.
Really, what more needs to be said? This is Better Living Through Discarded Music, baby. With such killers as Sal Masi’s Untouchables, Thee Mighty Caesars, the Hydes, the Pink Fits, Bo Dollis and the Wild Magnolia Mardi Gras Indian Band, Whispering Pig, the Dirtys, El Capris, etc. — it’s a given that none of this requires mention!
Though we probably should mention that the winner of Los Hories “What’s The Time?” CD giveaway Haiku contest is announced. You don’t want to miss that.
Last week Mrs. Kaiser and I took the kids to see Monsters Vs. Aliens… It was okay, I guess. The kids dug it! I enjoyed the 3D. Boy, has that technology come a long way! Back in the old days I would give up on a 3D movie half-way through with a splitting headache. With the new three dimensional techniques being employed I had a good time watching the movie even though the script was poor. But that isn’t what this post is about; it’s about The B-52’s.
Monsters Vs. Aliens ends with “Planet Claire”, and my kids really liked it! As far as I know they had never heard it before. They have heard “Rock Lobster” – as it is in another kid’s movie that we have lying around H.Q. – and they really enjoy that one as well. So, being the neat-o dad that I am, I dug around the boxes of records in the garage (of course all the good ones are in the house! Sheesh… I am a record nut, fer crying-out-loud) and found The B-52’s self-titled debut album to play for the young ‘uns. They were pleased-as-punch to listen to the aforementioned tracks quite a few times in a row, but could easily leave the other 7 tracks of the long-player behind. Actually, that was a bit of a let-down because I was always partial to “6060-842″. That may be because my 1st B-52’s purchase was the “Rock Lobster” 45 b/w “6060-842″, which I now realize (and here is the kicker of this whole post)… was 30 years ago! I was the same age (roughly) as my oldest daughter when I 1st bought a brand new, recently recorded B-52’s record.
The music from my youth is now technically Oldies!!
As my aunt would say (whilst butchering the lyrics of one Steve Miller): “Time keeps on passing, passing, passing into the future”.
I went on YouTube to find a video of The B-52’s to show the kids… What is it with bands and record labels forcing official, low-quality music videos off YouTube?! Did they not read about Monty Python and the amount of money they are making by making high-quality videos available on YouTube? But I (as usual) digress. I didn’t find a video of “Rock Lobster”, “Planet Claire”, or even “6060-842″, but I found something even better than a goofy production video… a clip from (presumably) some Television show of the band lip-syncing my personal favorite B-52’s song – “Private Idaho”.
Baby! Not only does RadiOblivion provide you Better Living Through Discarded Music, but it has proven Einstein’s theory of relativity… all on eppy-sode 36!
Time travel is real, friends. Michael Kaiser interviews Baron Aaron Lost of Los Hories: the band from the future (see previous post)! Auckland, New Zealand to be more specific. Listen as two cats travel in time to speak to each other and get to know all about your new favorite band. Experience past and future colliding in one giant hour-and-eight-minute SONIC BOOM!
Hey, as an extra bonus we’re holding a giveaway contest for Los Hories’ CD, What’s the Time. All you need to do is write a Haiku about RadiOblivion and post it in the comment section for eppy-sode 36 on the GaragePunk blog. Get them creative juices oozing, kids; you want this alboom!
Woo-hoo! I successfully thought of the dumbest contest possible.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again (and again, etc.) Los Hories are one of my mostest favorite new bands! Hailing from a suburb of Auckland, New Zealand called Ponsonby (see map), these folk play the most honest, lo-fi, primitive form of Rock ‘N’ Roll that any noodnik could axe for! In fact the name is taken from common N.Z. slang meaning “doing things on the cheap”. But more on that in a couple days because Baron Aaron Lost – guitar mangler/voice box extraordinaire will be joining me on the next eppy-sode o’ RadiOblivion!
Los Hories‘ 1st full length CD is called “What’s The Time” – which is fitting since each time Aaron and I talk we keep axin’ each other “What time is it there?” That man lives in the future, baby! Makes getting together to yap about cool stuff difficult… but we did it. The album (alboom! is more like it) is on Off The Hip Records run by the suave Mickster out of Australia; and you NEED it, friends. In fact, we’re gonna be doing a give-a-way contest for a copy. Keep yer eardrums tuned-up and well oiled! Details and such will be included on Wednesday’s eppy-sode of RadiOblivion. Number 36 I do believe.
In the meantime, check out this great video of Los Hories performin’ the genius “Queenie” by The Gories live at Bar Open Melbourne, September 2008! Do those two band names sound strikingly similar? Learn more about that too on the next RadiOblivion. And remember to Blow Yer Radio Up, Baby!!
